Three buckets, kept deliberately separate: ① fixed (insurance + hangar + annual/squawks + training + subscriptions = $54,900/yr, $4,575/mo) is owed whether the airplane flies 0 hours or 300, and splits by ownership share — everyone who owns a piece pays their share regardless of who's flying. ③ the hourly rate ($482.00/hr: fuel $300 + oil $8 + engine/prop/airframe reserves) is a flat rate every pilot pays for their own hours, ownership share irrelevant — it's the direct cost of turning the engines. ② variable is just that rate applied to actual hours flown ($48,200/yr at 100 hrs total), split among operators by whose hours they are, not by ownership %. Reserves are overhaul cost ÷ TBO hours, banked per hour flown so the airplane pays for its own next overhaul.

What's the real cost per hour to fly a piston twin?

It depends heavily on how many hours you fly a year, since fixed costs (insurance, hangar, annual inspection) don't scale with hours. For a Cessna 421B at typical fixed costs of ~$55k/yr and ~$480/hr variable, flying 75 hrs a year costs roughly $1,200/hr blended; flying 150 hrs drops that to roughly $850/hr — same airplane, very different economics.

What is an engine reserve and why budget for it?

An engine reserve is the overhaul cost divided by the engine's TBO (time between overhauls) hours, set aside per flight hour so the airplane funds its own next overhaul instead of surprising you with a six-figure bill. For a geared twin-Cessna engine, that's roughly $110–$140/hr against a ~$100k overhaul spread over a 1,600-hour TBO.

Why do twin Cessna annual inspections cost so much?

Twin Cessnas (400-series) carry pressurization, retractable gear, and two engines/props worth of squawks, and annuals on the type commonly run $20,000–$40,000 or more depending on the airframe's condition and deferred maintenance.
